European Union origin

The European Union traces it roots back to the European Coal and Steel Community. The EU was created by the Maastricht Treaty on 7 Feb 1992

The European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) was a six-nation international organisation serving to unify Western European coal and steel production. It was the first organisation to be based on the principles of supranationalism. Its creator, French foreign minister Robert Schuman, hoped it would eventually lead to the establishment of the States of Europe being permanently united in peace. The present European Union traces its roots directly to the ECSC. The organisation was first proposed by Schuman on 9 May 1950. see "The Schuman Declaration".
