Facebook launched 4 February 2004 on Harvard Campus

Facebook launched 4 February 2004 on Harvard Campus

" Since 2006, anyone who claims to be at least 13 years old has been allowed to become a registered user of Facebook, though variations exist in this requirement, depending on local laws"(No reference in Wikipedia Article)

"Facebook held its initial public offering (IPO) in February 2012, valuing the company at $104 billion, the largest valuation to date for a newly listed public company. It began selling stock to the public three months later. Facebook makes most of its revenue from advertisements that appear onscreen."(No reference in Wikipedia Article)
I remember reading about the launch. Financial analysts were warning that "Facebook shares were overpriced for the IPO as Facebook revenue was too low" (reference) "The shares fell quickly in value"(reference) and "shareholders sued" (reference)

31 August 2018 I'll find the references at a later date. (KB)

Climate Change-ocean sea levels

Last week, I think, a newspaper had a clear article about rising sea levels.
The water level rise in Sydney Harbour in summer is partly due to water expanding as it heats up and partly due to an annual tide.

Arctic ice melting doesn't change sea levels because the Arctic ice is already floating in the ocean. It is land ice melting that raises sea levels eg Greenland,Antarctica.

The current icy winter in Europe doesn't cancel out the hot weather in the Southern Hemisphere say climate change supporters

Climate Change and Global Warming

Further to some mention at this morning's weekly meeting of 25 Nov 2009 at Odessa Cafe, Martin Place, Sydney. I searched for information on the EU and climate change.

UNFCCC

Ironically the European Coal and Steel Community, the precursory organisation to the European Union was founded by the work of Robert Schuman, a member of the French Christian Democatic Party.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Framework_Convention_on_Climate_Change

"An international environment treaty produced at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) or Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro 3-14 June 1992. The treaty set no mandatory limits on greenhouse gas emmission and contained no enforcement mechanisms and was not legally binding. However the treaty provided updates ( called "protocols") Kyoto Protocol was protocol 37"

"The parties to the convention have met annually from 1995 in Conferences of the Parties (COP) to assess progress in dealing with climate change. In 1997, the Kyoto Protocol was concluded and established legally binding obligations for developed countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_Protocol

"Annex I countries which have ratified the Protocol have committed to reduce their emission levels of greenhouse gasses to targets that are mainly set below their 1990 levels. They may do this by allocating reduced annual allowances to the major operators within their borders. These operators can only exceed their allocations if they buy emission allowances , or offset their excesses through a mechanism that is agreed by all the parties to UNFCCC."

"Annex II countries are a sub-group of the Annex I countries. They comprise the OECD members, excluding those that were economies in transition in 1992."
